Nokia Plans Tablet to Take on iPad
Nokia is the latest in a growing line of consumer electronics manufacturers eager to produce a tablet following the buzz Apple created with the iPad.
According to TheStreet, the mobile giant is already working with partners to develop a new touchscreen tablet. The company aims to get it to market by fall in time to meet holiday demand.
Nokia is in a unique position to develop an iPad competitor, having launched a line of tablet devices as early as 2005 with the Nokia 770. Followed by two successors, the N800 and N810 (pictured above right), the Nokia Internet Tablets line never really took off. The company ended up retooling the latest spiritual successor, the N900, as a mobile phone.
Whereas Nokia’s high-end smartphone line is heading toward the Linux-based Maemo for its standard operating system, the new tablet could potentially run MeeGo, the new mobile operating system the company is developing with Intel. If so, MeeGo-based tablets would join the fleet of other tablets slated to run Android and Windows 7 coming later this year.

Having seen the hefty loss of $850 million by the search Leader AOL during the acquisition of BEBO, i see such kind of efforts done by one company in competition to other company as a risky initiative. Anyways our best wishes are to Nokia, they come up with Flying colors!!!!

i dont think nokia want to Take on iPad. It just another release of (they-already-have-since-2005) tablet line up

A Nokia MeeGo tablet will only gain market share if it can be manufactured at a *significantly* lower cost than competitive devices. Given the iPad at $500, Netbooks at $200 – 300, I'd say another tablet running Linux will need to be priced at $150 to get people to buy it.

Seems like an awful lot of blog skimming passing for knowledge in replies.
Seems unfair (or unwise) to illustrate an article about a 2010+ product with a 2005 image.

It's always funny to see the Mashable Apple loving nubs making comments about stuff they are clueless about.

Well, first of all, Nokia is phasing out Maemo towards MeeGo. There will obviously be some Maemo activity, but the thrust is towards MeeGo. Second, this is going to wind up being a battle of lawyers and salesmen, at least in the USA, where Nokia has very little marketing muscle.

It will be interesting to see if any of these companies can bring to the market place a tablet that will have such a smooth UI, excellent battery life and price point of the iPad. Nokia just seem like a big lumbering giant that can't think outside the box when it comes to phones and UI. I just can't see them coming up with a tablet of any real meaning .
Apple, Micorsoft and Google are they way forward for phones and tablets.

Nokia, at least try to make it look cool. It looks like a phone from about 10 years ago… I thought Europe was ahead of us in trends. Man that is one giant ugly leap backwards.

ARE YOU SERIOUS?!
Ok, no like really?
Nokia?
I'd LOVE to see Nokia try to make a mobile OS (or anything really) that doesn't make we want to kill baby kittens.
